House in the Horseshoe Archaeology Day
House in the Horseshoe, North Carolina State Historic site will be hosting the 1st Annual Archaeology Day from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm a, Saturday December 5, 2015. This is your chance to find out what’s under the ground at House in the Horseshoe and to talk with experts in the fields of Archaeology, Metal Detecting, History, and Geology. The event is Free.
Experts will be on hand to answer your questions about House in the Horseshoe land through time, who lived at the site, and what they left behind. We will have Jacob Turner, the UNC-Greensboro doctorale candidate who conducted a two year long excavation of House in the Horseshoe. He will be discussing how he used the tools of the trade in his search for artifacts, what he found as he dug throught he dirt, and how archaeologists preserve and protect these fascinating relics. We will also have other experts in the fields of Archaeology, Geology, History, and Metal Detecting on hand to answer questions and provide insight into the history of House in the Horseshoe.
We will also have many of the archaeology instruments and tools used at House in the Horseshoe to uncover the artifacts along with actual artifacts Jacob found in his excavations using these instruments and tools. We will also have several fun hands-on activities for the whole family including mini-archaeology kits and kinetic sand to make landscape features.
