Lessons Learned: The Government Side of Business: What Entrepreneurs Should Know Before Taking That Leap
The Moore County Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Sandhills Community College Small Business Center and Moore Forward is hosting its second session of the Lessons Learned Series for 2016 on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 12 Noon at the Moore County Chamber of Commerce. This session is open to anyone in the business community, but RSVPs are required as a light lunch will be provided.
Owning a business and being your own boss would be a dream come true for most people; which is why you want to make sure that you have double checked, even triple checked that you are following the proper procedures for opening your business. You have to be vigilant of every aspect so that you are setting your business up for success, even before you open your doors.
- Maybe you want to open a water garden and tea room in the lower level of your home! It’s your home and personal property so you can do what you want with it, right? Wrong, you have to make sure your property is zoned properly for these types of uses.
- Maybe you are going to create an awesome new sign out of recycled pallet wood for your business! WAIT! You have to get approval first to make sure the sign is within regulations and standards in the community where your business is opening.
- Maybe you want to open a country coffee cafe with a small dog park attached to it! All you need to do is put a fence around the property, correct? Not so fast, you need to be sure the zoning will allow for such a business.
The above scenarios may be slightly blown out of proportion but this Lessons Learned session is here to help local entrepreneurs get a good handle on all the “know how” that they will need when starting their own business. We want you to be prepared, to be ready, and to understand all the rules and regulations that each community has in place for businesses.
Session two of the Lessons Learned Series will host a panel of City and County Planners. The session will be facilitated by Reagan Parsons: Southern Pines Town Manager and the panel will consist of Chris Kennedy: Senior Planner-Town of Southern Pines, Kevin Reed: Planning Director-Village of Pinehurst, Pam Graham: Planning Director-Town of Aberdeen and Teresa Thompson: Moore County Senior Planner. These experts will review the basic “do’s and don’ts” when opening a business and will be answering any questions that you may have. Attending this event before taking your first steps toward starting a business will save you a lot of time and money.
“In the second session of the four part Lessons Learned series, we decided to take a different approach“ said Linda Parsons, President & CEO of the Moore County Chamber of Commerce. “We listened to the discussions from the previous sessions and realized we needed to go back to the basics of opening a business; which is why we chose this particular subject matter and experts. There are always challenges when opening a business and being prepared is the best way to alleviate the majority of those challenges. We encourage everyone that is able to participate to join us.”
There is no charge to attend and the event is open to the entire community, but RSVPs are required due to space limitations. To reserve your spot for the second session of Lessons Learned contact the Chamber at 910.692.3926 or by visiting www.moorecountychamber.com Lunch will be provided.
