St. Joseph of The Pines Hosts "Caregiving During the Holidays" Seminar; Free Confidential Memory Screenings
The unique holiday challenges facing caregivers for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease will be discussed at a Dec. 8 seminar in the Belle Meade Clubhouse.
Karen Owens, education & family services manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter, will address how to make the holidays easier through preparation and understanding. Owens will include tips on how to care for the caregiver if you are making a holiday visit to the household of a person with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
“I think it’s important to find ways to meet the needs of the caregiver and the person affected so that everyone can enjoy the holiday season,” she said.
There are more than 5 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and that number is expected to grow to 16 million by 2050.
The seminar from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. is free and open to the public. There will also be free confidential memory screenings from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. in the clubhouse, which is located at 100 Waters Drive in Southern Pines. No appointment is necessary.
Memory-related programs are sponsored as a community service by St. Joseph of the Pines and the Lifelong Learning Institute at Sandhills Community College.
“A person is never too young to have a memory screening,” said Caroline Hendricks, vice president of home and community based services for St. Joseph of the Pines. “It is critical to have a baseline to share with your physician and to have on file in the event a problem ever arises.”
Hendricks said the nonprofit has performed more than 300 complimentary memory screenings in the past year.
“We have also provided invaluable education on dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease,” she said. “Our goal is be a partner in care and services.”
Owens said the Alzheimer’s Association promotes early detection.
“Which makes events like these of critical importance,” she said.
St. Joseph of the Pines is an aging service network offering a full continuum of retirement housing, health care and community-based services for older adults as well as community outreach to those in need. It is a Trinity Senior Living Community continuing the legacy of the Sisters of Providence.
