Calling on riveters in our nation’s fight against COVID-19

SOUTHERN PINES, NC (March 24, 2020) — On National Rosie the Riveter Day (March 21) R. Riveter, put out a call to their network to come together to manufacture face mask covers in an effort to provide much needed supplies to the front lines fighting against COVID-19 in medical and first responder organizations.

As the healthcare system in the U.S. is strained to manage the current crisis — facing surge capacity of patients — many healthcare workers do not have the proper personal protection equipment (PPE) available to them. PPE such as N95 face masks, is absolutely critical to keeping our healthcare workers on the front lines safe; yet this gear is widely unavailable to them due to overwhelming demand and strains on the supply chain.

The CDC has outlined that in a crisis situation, when approved PPE masks are not available, healthcare workers may resort to a handmade mask as a last resort or use a mask cover. Millions of handmade masks and covers are now needed. R.Riveter is calling anyone who knows how to sew or has access to raw materials  to be a modern day Rosie the Riveter and contribute to the cause.

R.Riveter is a handbag company that has built a remote network of riveters sewing the various parts of their handbags in support of providing flexible and mobile income for military spouses. “Who knew that over the last eight years we were unknowingly building a network capable of responding to this crisis at hand,” stated Lisa Bradley, Co-FOUNDER of R.Riveter. “Just as the women supporting the wartime effort during World War II answered the call to assist with supplies and munitions, we are asking the community to answer the call to assist in this wartime effort against a deadly enemy.” The brand’s flagship retail store is located in the heart of Southern Pines, NC.

R.Riveter has successfully developed a pattern and specifications for a mask cover to donate to any first responders in need on the frontline and is asking anyone with the skillset to make these masks or supplies needed to produce them to join the movement.
