July 17, 2025 — The Brooklyn Pickle, a beloved Syracuse institution, is proud to announce its 50th anniversary
celebration. Since 1975, this iconic sandwich shop has been delighting Central New Yorkers—and more recently,
customers in Southern Pines, Raleigh, and Charlotte, North Carolina—with its legendary overstuffed sandwiches, awardwinning
soups, and welcoming atmosphere.
This July 17th, the Brooklyn Pickle isn’t just marking half a century of business; it’s saying thank you to the loyal
customers who have made this journey possible.
A Celebration with Specials for All
To show appreciation, all Brooklyn Pickle locations will be offering exclusive anniversary specials:
• $5 Whole Sandwiches
• $5 Limited-Edition Anniversary T-Shirts
• 50¢ Chips
• 50¢ Fountain Drinks
• 50¢ Whole Pickles
• and more surprises in store!
“Our customers are the reason we’re here today,” said proprietor Craig Kowadla. “This celebration is all about giving back
to the communities that have supported us for 50 amazing years.”
A Humble Beginning to a Regional Favorite
The Brooklyn Pickle story began in 1975 when founder Ken Sniper opened the first shop in a modest 13-foot-wide
storefront on Burnet Avenue in Syracuse. Operating with just $2,000 in startup capital and a shared building with a
beauty salon, Sniper brought his giant, overstuffed sandwiches to the neighborhood.
The popularity of the shop led to rapid expansion, with a second location opening on the city’s West Side within two
years. Over time, both shops underwent major renovations, including the construction of a brand-new Burnet Avenue
building in 1992 and a stylish overhaul of the West Genesee Street location in 2011.
In 2019, the Brooklyn Pickle added a third Syracuse-area shop on Buckley Road in Liverpool, offering customers indoor
and patio seating in a spacious, modern environment. A fourth New York location followed in Utica, housed in the historic
Utica Steam Cotton Building.
Bringing Brooklyn Pickle to the South
Kowadla, deeply connected to North Carolina, has extended the Brooklyn Pickle experience to the South. New locations
in Southern Pines, Raleigh and Charlotte have introduced North Carolinians to the shop’s famously large sandwiches,
homemade sides, and BP’s friendly, fast-paced atmosphere.
The Secret to 50 Years of Success
While much has changed over the decades, the Brooklyn Pickle has never wavered in its commitment to quality food, fast
and friendly service, and community connection.
“As we reflect on our journey from a 13-foot-wide sandwich counter to seven thriving locations, we’re reminded of what
really matters—great food served with a smile and the incredible people we serve,” said Kowadla.
